STEPHANIE AMES

Stephanie Ames is an abstract visual artist drawn to varied materials. She approaches her work with a sense of exploration and restraint. Her work evolves in response to the materials she is using, often combining collage elements, precious metals, metal leaf and painting. The juxtaposition of mixed materials in her work, at times, creates a tension emblematic of the unease of our time.

Stephanie has been working with metals as a jewelry designer since 1998 and has leveraged this knowledge to explore using metals in a different form—metal point drawings that often show signs of aging and oxidation as they are exposed to light. This shifting visual experience is a recurring theme in her work and represents the passing of time and memory.

She revels in the unexpected and finds inspiration in many forms— from the lines of a flower, the patina of aged metal, to the textures of handmade paper and the light in Southern Italy.

She has studied abstraction with Jeffrey Simmons at Gage Academy of Art since 2019.

Stephanie Ames is currently living and working in Seattle, Washington.
